Summary
I am a globally recognized expert in health behavior and health equity with over 35 years of experience designing and evaluating behavior change programs across diverse public health settings working with researchers in over 25 countries, and training more than 1,000 professionals in motivational interviewing and technology-driven health interventions.
My work spans smoking cessation, cancer screening, vaccine uptake, genetic testing, obesity prevention, medication adherence, diet, exercise, organ donation, and youth risk behaviors. A central focus of my research has been addressing health disparities in underserved populations. In recent years, I have pioneered the use of cutting-edge eHealth technologies to deliver personalized interventions. These include a digital coach for cancer genetic testing, a violence prevention app, and GPS-triggered dietary change tools. My work is grounded in motivational interviewing, self-determination theory, and chaos theory, ensuring interventions are evidence-based and person-centered.
With over 4,200 peer-reviewed publications, I serve on numerous advisory boards, including the NIH Council for the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research. I provide expert consultation on study design, intervention development, and data analysis, contributing to impactful public health initiatives that address complex health behaviors and advance health equity worldwide.
