My research focuses on two major areas. The first is statistical methods development for electronic health data with a particular focus on development of machine learning techniques to handle censored data. Second, I work on novel methods for causal inference and estimation of dynamic treatment regimes (DTRs). This includes methods for novel clinical trials (e.g., SMART designs) used to test DTRs. I also collaborate on projects related to transplantation, smoking cessation, cardiovascular disease, and infectious disease.

Research Summary/Interests

Projects that I have worked on or are ongoing include

  • Prediction of cardiovascular risk using the data from electronic medical record from a regional HMO
  • Determining the optimal treatment strategy for patients with multiple commodities (e.g., hyperglycemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension) to reduce cardiovascular risk
  • Understanding the effect community-wide prevention strategies on heart disease biomarkers
  • Determining the survival benefit conferred by lung transplantation and recipient and donor characteristics which moderate this effect
  • Analysis the effect of lung transplant on quality of life throughout the first year post-transplant
  • Assessing the effect of acute changes in the lung allocation score on post-transplantation survival
  • Predictive modeling of sustained virologic response for patients with hepatitis C undergoing standard therapy
  • Understanding the effect of IL28B on achieving sustained virologic response for patients with hepatitis C
  • Genomewide association study of steatosis and LDL cholesterol levels in hepatitis C patients and the effect of those predictors on treatment success
  • Analysis of the effect of hepatitis C virus on the metabolomics pathway of cholesterol
  • Using hemodynamic measurements (baseline and change after contrast agents are administered) to predict adverse events in heart failure patients
  • Analysis of the damage sustained to stents during deployment
  • Assessing the time sites spend processing and reviewing severe adverse event reports for early phase clinical trials
  • Predicting stopping time in large clinical trials that are event driven
  • Chapter on the use of observational data in book on clinical research

Academic Interests and Focus

My core goal across my classroom teaching and advising is to transform our students from consumers of information to producers of new knowledge.

Teaching Areas

My teaching and advising has been extremely versatile. I have taught both theoretical and applied statistics courses, courses for non-Bisotatistics graduate students, Masters and PhD required courses in the Biostatistics graduate program, and a PhD-elective course. I have advised and mentored students across the Division, School of Public Health, and University.
